Cartridge Comparison Guide 2 is the ultimate hunting and ballistics source, built to help shooters maximize cartridge capabilities and ballistic understanding. The Guide considers every major factory and hand-load source for every Rifle, Shotgun and Handgun cartridge available in the USA. That is over 250 unique cartridges! It then breaks down all of this ballistics data, covering thousands of unique loads, and eliminates the mediocre and anemic loads. The result is a simple and easy to use set of data tables that presents the best ballistic potential, in every bullet weight available, for any cartridge a shooter can buy. Hunters and shooters will gain maximum benefit from a personalized cartridge selection using this book.
Many professional hunters have called the 2nd Edition of the Cartridge Comparison Guide "THE Hunting Bible". Elite military snipers and avid outdoorsmen alike have called this book the Best and Most Comprehensive and easily understood ballistics manual EVER WRITTEN!
The Guide offers several unique benefits that set it apart from any other ballistic manual offered in the industry today. Here are just a few to consider:
Tip One - Focusing on one cartridge you can see the full range of bullet weights and the best: velocity, energy, momentum, and associated recoil in every increment of bullet weight offered in the cartridge.
Tip Two – One can compare each individual load from a cartridge of interest to any other cartridge with a comparable load. This illustrates how far you can stretch a cartridge in respect to any other cartridge. You can explore the full performance envelope of any cartridge. Thus you can maximize any cartridge’s versatility and capability.
Tip Three - Projectile selection can be as important as cartridge selection. The Guide breaks down projectile construction; materials used and the intended application for each. This enables you, as a unique shooter, to understand which of the different projectiles will best fit your intended purpose and application.
Tip Four - Energy on target is not always the most important parameter when hunting. However, predictable, controlled, and repeatable bullet behavior after impact can be the difference between success and failure. The Guide breaks down wound channel development and ties it directly to bullet expansion and construction. This gives each hunter the advantages of first understanding the unique performance each cartridge and projectile combination can offer, and second, determining which of these offerings are of interest to them. The CCG ballistic manuals can help you clearly define and then fine tune your expectations and requirements for varmint or furbearing animals, and from Small game up to Large & Dangerous game or even the African Big 5.

The 45-70 Govt. Project of Experiments poster is a unique replica of the actual hand sketched report of the project of experiments conducted at the National Armory (Springfield, MA) and drafted in March of 1875.This chart displays the various experiments conducted using the .45 caliber bullet weighing between 200 grains and 800 grains, with powder charges between 10 grains and 140 grains, and barrel lengths between 1 inch and 12 inches. The test results show that the .45 caliber cartridge loaded with 70 grains of black powder and a bullet weight of 405 grains was the optimal choice for the service cartridge in the 32-5/8” barreled model 1873 trapdoor Springfield rifle.
The findings of these experiments confirmed the validity and utility of the 45-70-405 (45-70 Government) as a viable infantry cartridge capable of volley fire well beyond that era's accepted limit of effective range.

The Handgun Cartridges poster focuses on Handgun cartridges (revolver & automatic) from all over the world which includes Military, Law Enforcement, Civilian and Sporting use. It includes Metric, USA, and British cartridges.
An excellent tool for comparison, illustration or instruction!
The Ammo Performance Specs poster is a hand picked selection of some of the most popular hunting cartridges and represents the full spectrum available to the hunting world. These range from the lightning fast 17 Remington up to the bone crushing energy and momentum of the 460 Weatherby and 500 Jeffery.
The cartridges are organized into 17 unique groupings based on caliber. Each of the groups contain three or four cartridges that represent a "low, medium, and high" in there respective performance potential. A bullet weight is provided for each group. And the velocity, energy, momentum and recoil for each cartridge is shown in a bar graph as well as it's numeric value. Accurately compare one cartridge and it's specifications against any other cartridges of interest.
The Game & Ammo © poster (built specifically for youth, beginning hunters, & other enthusiasts) shows the range and breadth of game animals that can be hunted on the world stage, while providing a strong sampling of proven cartridges for hunting these animals. This poster is an exciting and very beneficial visual aid. The context, proximity and overall arrangement encourage good and informed discussions. In fact, this poster was developed in cooperation with Hunter Education instructors to develop an exciting teaching tool.
The Family of Cartridges poster visually simplifies the vastness and complexities of hunting cartridges available in the US. The world’s vast array of cartridges can actually be broken down into basic family groupings. Each family group share the same parent case…although the parent case has probably been modified to achieve a new or different result. Cartridges within the family can easily be organized from least to greatest in caliber, velocity, power, and recoil. By knowing the parent case (size and features), it is simple to determine the overall power potential of a given cartridge in addition to where it lies when comparing it with cartridges of other parent cases.
This poster takes six of the most well-known and influential hunting cartridges displayed at 200% scale so its easy to identify the shared case. These 6 cartridges are the 223 Remington, 30-30 Win, 308 Win, 30-06 Springfield, 300 Winchester Magnum and the 378 Weatherby Magnum. We then picked four or five popular cartridges (at 100% scale) and arranged them from least potent to greatest within that cartridge family.
See the Details section for some ideas of when understanding parent case and family groupings might be useful in your shooting pursuits
As long as you know a cartridge's parent case you can easily identify what family a cartridge belongs to and where that cartridge fits in the family (ie necked down with a smaller/lighter bullet or necked up with a larger/heavier bullet).
A usage example might be a hunter that is confident in a 308 Winchester/Short Action Rifle is looking for a larger caliber cartridge with a heavier bullet for increased stopping power on bigger game. If minimizing recoil or sticking with a short action rifle is a priority, (before jumping to a belted magnum) starting with a 308 sized cartridge may be in their best interest.
Another example could be hunting elk but any recoil greater than a 308 Win is unacceptable. A 7mm-08 or 260 Remington are built on the same case as the 308 and have similar powder charges.
Furthermore many shooters are unaware that a 458 and 338 Win Mag share the same case as a 7mm Rem Mag.
